Rho Phi Lambda

Rho Phi Lambda is the South African chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. We are the first chapter of the fraternity to be established in Africa during the new millennium.

Inception

Chartered on July 24, 2010 at the 104th anniversary convention of Alpha Phi Alpha in Las Vegas, Nevada, 2010, Rho Phi Lambda of Johannesburg, South Africa is the first chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha to be established in Southern Africa and also the first chapter established on the African continent in the 21st century.

The efforts of the the Brothers of Rho Phi Lambda in working to re-establish Alpha in Africa after a 30 plus year hiatus followed the establishment in 1976 of Kappa Phi chapter in Monrovia, Liberia (which had been preceded in 1958 by Eta Epsilon Lambda also in Monrovia, Liberia). Both of the Liberian chapters were de-chartered - but a current effort is underway to re-charter a chapter of Alpha in Liberia within the next 12 months.
